What is Cefprozil

Cefprozil is a cephalosporin antibiotic that is typically used to treat infections such as bronchitis as well as other infections such as that of the skin, ears, tonsils, throat or sinuses.  Cefprozil is only used to treat bacterial infections and does so by stopping the growth of the bacteria within the body. This medication cannot be used to treat common colds or other viral infections.

The antibiotic can be prescribed as a tablet or as liquid suspension. The normal course of treatment is taking the prescribed dosage every 12 or 24 hours for a period of 10 days.

The dosage of the medication is typically determined based on individuals such as weight, medical condition or response to medication. Cefprozil usually comes in 250 mg or 500 mg as an oral tablet another option is either 25 mg/ml or 50 mg/ml as a liquid suspension.

Important Information

It is important to take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor which is typically once or twice a day. To ensure you do not miss a dose, it is recommended to take the medication at the same time every day.

It is important to note that stopping medication before you have finished your full treatment can be problematic and lessen the ability for the medication to treat future infections. Even if you begin to feel better, you must continue to finish the full round of medication. It is also important to note that using this medication to treat any other illnesses except that which it is prescribed may cause the medication to be ineffective in treating future bacterial infections.

Be sure to inform your doctor if you have had allergic reactions to any medications, penicillin antibiotics or other cephalosporin antibiotics such as cefazolin (Ancef, Kefzol), cefdinir , cefditoren (Spectracef), cefepime (Maxipime), cefixime (Suprax), cefotaxime (Claforan).

Side Effects

The medication can cause side effects and it is important to tell your doctor if any symptoms do not go away or are too severe. Some side effects may include but are not limited to: nausea, dizziness, stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting.

Some more serious sides can include but are not limited to hives, itching, difficulty breathing or swallowing, wheezing, fever, swelling, or rashes. If any of these symptoms occur it is important to seek emergency medical treatment immediately and contact your doctor.

As previously mentioned, if any unusual issues occur while taking cefprozil, contact your care provider to determine what is the best course of action.
